About JCU Digital-Disruption-2024

Digital Disruption 2024

On 19 July 2024, nationwide digital service disruptions were caused by a defective update to cyber security firm, CrowdStrike’s Falcon software.

This global incident was an IT failure, not a cyber security attack.

Whilst CrowdStrike and Microsoft quickly identified, isolated, and provided a fix to the issue, the impact is widespread and could take some time to resolve.

Action taken by JCU:

  • The JCU IT Helpdesk monitored any potential reported impact from JCU staff and students
  • Technology Solutions staff monitored the situation over the weekend in conjunction with our technology partners
  • JCU services have not been directly impacted, however, please report any disruptions to JCU systems to the IT Help Desk immediately.

Increased risk of phishing
There is an increased risk of attackers exploiting this situation. Please be mindful to pay extra attention regarding misinformation and potential phishing campaigns claiming to be Microsoft or CrowdStrike. If you suspect you have been targeted, please contact the IT Help Desk.
