Throughout the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary) at James Cook University, preservice teachers engage with subjects designed to support the development of what teachers need to know and be able to do in order to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education. Both dedicated subjects and the integration of dedicated themes in wider subjects support this development. Dedicated subjects include:
- Examining teaching for learning to develop the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers requirements of standard 1.4 and 2.4 in ED2991: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education
- Reviewing theory and practice of teaching English to Indigenous children as an additional language from birth to 18 years in ED3443: English as an Additional Language/Dialect for Indigenous learners
- Engaging with critical Indigenous theory to explore and examine personal and professional knowledge and beliefs about Indigenous education in ED4461: Indigenous Futures
Our staff are also engaged in research to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education. Contact our Education staff for more information.
