The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE)

The Australian Government requires that all students undertaking an Initial Teacher Education program possess levels of personal literacy and numeracy broadly equivalent to the top 30% of the Australian adult population. The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) is the means for demonstrating this standard. Therefore, all students enrolled in an Initial Teacher Education course must sit and achieve the required standard for both the Literacy and Numeracy tests included in the LANTITE. The test is designed and administered by the Australian Council of Educational Research (ACER). This is also part of the requirement for graduation in Queensland and an expectation of the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT).

It is a national requirement that all Initial Teacher Education pre-service teachers undertake the LANTITE. Also, all pre-service teachers must attempt the LANTITE before the end of their first year of study. At James Cook University (JCU), pre-service teachers must also successfully complete the LANTITE prior to their professional experience placement and Teacher Performance Assessment in their final year of study.

There are four test windows available in a year via ACER. Tests can be completed at a test centre or remotely online. Note that there is a limited availability of test centre locations and it is highly recommended that you familiarise yourself with the windows and test centres as soon as possible in your first year of study:

  • Test dates can be found here.
  • Test centres can be found here.
  • If you are unable to attend a test centre, information on Remote proctoring can be found here.

If you completed the LANTITE at another institution or before enrolment, you need to submit a copy of your Results Statement to JCU for verification.

In the case of First Nations language speakers, recognition of First Nations language proficiency by the relevant cultural authority is an acceptable alternative standard to the LANTITE.

If you are proficient in an Australian First Nations Language (inclusive of pre- and post- colonisation languages) you can apply for recognition of this as an acceptable alternative standard to the LANTITE.

Students who meet the criteria for this alternative standard to LANTITE should facilitate the completion of the Alternative Standard Application, including verification by the authority relevant to the option chosen, and submit it for assessment.
