Honours:

The award of Honours (I, IIA, IIB) or Pass degrees in Engineering will be determined by the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences after a candidate has completed the Credit Point requirements for their degree, by:

  • Consideration of the weighted Grade Point Average achieved by a candidate over all four levels of engineering study. Weighted average GPA = (1 x level 1 GPA + 2 x level 2 GPA + 3 x level 3 GPA + 4 x level 4 GPA)/10.

  • Consideration of the capacity for research demonstrated in the final year project (Thesis). Candidates anticipating First Class Honours must pursue a thesis with a significant research component.

Progression

Course progression requisites

Where there is overlap between the core subjects from the two chosen majors, candidates are required to contact the faculty office to add substitute subjects to their study plans.

It is strongly recommended that in this situation candidates take extra engineering subjects as listed under the corresponding major in the Bachelor of Engineering degree.

Course includes mandatory professional placement(s)

No

Special assessment requirements

The engineering thesis topic must be specific to the candidate’s chosen engineering major.

Accreditation requirements

Advanced Standing

Eligibility

Candidates may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning policy associated procedures.

Maximum allowed

48 credit points

Currency

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 10 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.

Other restrictions

A minimum of 18 credit points of engineering subjects (including 6 credit points of fourth year thesis) should be completed at James Cook University for each of levels 3 and 4.

If the candidate requests advanced standing approaching this maximum level, then the advanced standing should be predominantly from the first two levels of the Bachelor of Engineering program.

Award Details

Honours award

Students who have achieved the Post Admission Requirements for Honours, as considered by the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, shall be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Engineering with Honours.

Honours

Honours availability

Honours is available in either or both disciplines.

Engineering honours is available in-course (see Eligibility section below for details).

Science honours requires an extra 24 credit points of study.

Eligibility

Engineering Honours

Science Honours

Normally a minimum average grade of Credit is required in the pass degree subjects relevant to the field in which Science honours is to be taken.
