Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Completion of at least an AQF level 7 Bachelor of Nursing Science or Bachelor of Nursing Science – Bachelor of Midwifery within the previous five years; and

Achievement of an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across the final three years of the bachelor degree

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3a Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Additional selection requirements

Application for entry to the Honours program is by approval of the College Dean.

Quota restrictions on the number of honours places available may apply from time to time as determined by the College Dean.

Students for honours who have graduated with a pass degree from this or another university or who graduated more than five years ago may be required to complete such coursework or assessment as the College Dean recommends.

Special admission requirements

Applicants must be a registered nurse (Division 1) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Nursing Science (Honours) graduates will be able to:

  • Integrate and apply a coherent and advanced body of theoretical and technical knowledge and skills, with depth in the underlying principles and concepts, in the discipline of nursing

  • Critically review, analyse, synthesise and evaluate evidence to identify and provide solutions to complex problems of relevance to the discipline of nursing

  • Convey information, arguments and conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences, demonstrating advanced proficiency in English language and, where appropriate, numeracy

  • Apply knowledge of research principles and methods to plan and execute project work and/or a piece of research and scholarship with some independence

  • Identify and act upon opportunities for life-long learning as a strategy to promote professional development of self, others and the discipline of nursing.
