Distinguishing features

Erect plants, leaves opposite, all parts produce an aromatic smell when crushed. Distinguished from similar species by the fruiting calyx which has a dense cluster of hairs on the inside just above the nutlets and the upper lip is 2-3 mm long as against the common basil, O. basilicum where the upper lip is 4-6 mm long.
