Simarouba, this was a local, northern South American name for a tree with bitterwood and bark used for medicinal purposes, produces triterpenoid lactones. Trees and shrubs with alternate, usually compound rarely simple leaves. Flowers small and pale. Carpels 2-5, free or fused; fruit either dry and winged, or drupe or occasionally berry-like.
