About this Event

This event will also be live streamed, please register.

The 2024 Annual Mayo Lecture presented by James Cook University will be delivered by His Honour Judge Jarro. The Mayo Lecture is a distinguished annual event organised by the College of Business, Law, and Governance in collaboration with the James Cook University Law Students Society (JCULSS). This prestigious lecture series is held in honour of Mrs Marylyn Mayo, a foundational law staff member at JCU. This year's Mayo Lecture is titled “An Aboriginal Perspective (from the Bench),” and we are delighted to announce that His Honour Judge Jarro will be reflecting on Indigenous representation within juries. The lecture promises to deliver insightful perspectives on this vital aspect of our justice system.

The event will take place at the Bebegu Yumba Campus in Douglas, Townsville, and will be followed by a networking event that will allow participants to engage with one another. Separate registration for the Networking Function is required, please use the registration link below.

About the Presenter

Judge Jarro identifies as Ghangalu on his father's side and Bidjara on his mother's side. In March 2018, Judge Jarro was appointed to the District Court of Queensland, making him at the time the only Indigenous judge in Queensland.

In 2000, his Honour was associate to the Honourable Justice Martin Moynihan AO. His Honour was called to the Bar in 2004 after practising previously as a solicitor for a number of years and practised predominately in insurance and administrative law. Whilst at the Bar, his Honour held appointments to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) (2009), the Mental Health Review Tribunal (2009) and the Aboriginal Land Tribunal (2015).

Judge Jarro has occupied several roles in the service of local arts and culture, including as board director of the Queensland Theatre Company (2011–2018), director of Major Brisbane Festivals Pty Ltd (2003–09) and board director of National Indigenous Television Ltd (2010–13).

In 2020, Judge Jarro was awarded the Queensland University of Technology Alumni of the Year. From 2022, Judge Jarro has been a member of the University of Queensland Senate.
