History of the prize

The Emeritus Professor Peter Arlett Prize was established in 2023 in Peter’s memory by his family.

Peter Arlett (Prof) was born in Wales in 1932 and was extremely proud of his Welsh heritage. He completed his electrical trade before entering the University realm which was to become his life’s work. He obtained his BSc and PhD at the University of Wales, Swansea and moved to Townsville in 1976 to become the Foundation Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at James Cook University, going on to become Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research before retiring in 1998. Prof was well respected in his professional life, both in industry and academia, he was a prolific contributor throughout his career and responsible for establishing several CRCs at JCU. Prof was acutely aware of the intricacies of power generation and was passionately talking about the need for a focus on renewable energy from the 1970’s including solar, wind and hydro and tidal power generation.
