Students a step closer to future careers
Nearly 3000 prospective James Cook University (JCU) students are a step closer to their chosen careers, with more than 1000 receiving offers in today’s Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) major round.
JCU Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Marcus Lane congratulated students who have received offers to date.
‘”We are delighted to see 6223 prospective students selecting JCU as their first preference or, preferred place to study to date,’’ Professor Lane said.
‘‘Combined with earlier rounds, we’ve now made a total of 2981 offers across all our Australian campuses and study centres, which is up over 10% from last year.
“These figures include 692 places for Cairns so far for 2025, which is up almost 18% from last year, and 2018 places in Townsville, also up from last year’s result.
“In Townsville, we saw the most offers go to Science courses with 290 places while Cairns saw the most offers in Dentistry with 112 places offered.’’
Professor Lane said for the 2025 study year, there had again been strong demand for traditionally popular courses such as Medicine (3144 first preference applications), Dentistry (867), Nursing (431) and Veterinary Science (215).
‘‘We are also seeing an increase in popularity for first-preference applications to study Nursing (up 15%) and Education (up 16%).
“It’s very pleasing to see these numbers improving from last year and we are excited for this next generation and the contributions they will make to the JCU community and their respective workforces in the future.”
In Far North Queensland, Cairns enjoyed significant increases in numbers compared to last year for Pharmacy (73%), Education (up 32%) and Nursing (19%).
Meanwhile Townsville’s largest growth disciplines were Veterinary Science (up 16%), Medical Sciences and Education (both up 15%) and Nursing (up 5%).
Prof Lane said further offers will also be made between now and Orientation Week in February, reassuring prospective students that there is a place for them here at JCU.
“We always encourage all students with an offer to take their time considering the offer and if their preferences have changed, that’s fine,’’ Professor Lane said.
‘‘JCU has expert advisors on staff to assist students with all the options available to them and they are ready and willing to provide any advice or assistance they may need when taking the first steps in building their future career.’’
He also said students should feel very proud of their achievements as they prepare to be welcomed to JCU.
“It’s always exciting to see a new cohort of young minds come through and hit the ground running through hands-on learning and JCU’s exceptional student experience,” Prof Lane said.
Applicants can check their offers via www.qtac.edu.au. JCU will also begin emailing offers to successful candidates today (Monday 15 January).
