Policy and Procedure
Access to the archives of the James Cook University is governed by the Queensland Public Records Act 2002, the Right to Information Act 2009, and internal procedures.
Access policy for records held by the University Archives is as follows:
Records older than thirty years are openly available, in accordance with the provisions of the Libraries and Archives Act.
Records less than thirty years old are accessed informally in accordance with the access provisions of the Right to Information Act. If no restrictions apply, the records are released. If restrictions are necessary then a formal request for access under the Right to Information Act must be directed to the Senior Records Coordinator.
There is no charge for information given outside the provisions of the Right to Information Act or in accordance with the Public Records Act, except for documents which are available for sale to the public, and for Archives' photocopying charges of 50 cents per page.
Access to personal papers is determined by provisions agreed to between the University Archives and the person donating the records.
The Manager, Corporate Information may restrict access to records which are too fragile or damaged to be handled.
