Max Eden Memorial Grant Bursary

The Max Eden Memorial Grant was established in the early 1990s by the AusIMM Far North Queensland Branch to financially assist secondary students enrolling in minerals-related tertiary courses at university. It is designed to assist with the cost in the transition from secondary to tertiary education.  The Grant was named to honour the late Max Eden, founder of the Far North Queensland Branch.

The Max Eden Memorial Grant Bursary is open for you to apply if you:

  • Are a commencing student in the year the bursary is to be awarded.
  • Are studying any course listed below:
    • Bachelor of Advanced Science majoring in Earth Science.
    • Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management.
    • Bachelor of Geology.
    • Bachelor of Science majoring in Earth Science.
  • Are enrolled full-time or part-time and JCU Cairns, Nguma-bada campus or JCU Townsville, Bebegu Yumba campus.

The value of the bursary is $2,000 paid in one lump sum after awarding.

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made. Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

  • A copy of your high school academic record and ATAR outcome,
  • A copy of your JCU academic record for 2024,
  • A written statement of no more than 500 words, describing:
    1. Why are you applying for the grant and how do you believe the grant will assist you.
    2. What do you believe are the key areas for building resilient regional and remote communities.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied. Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

The Selection Criteria are:

  1. Academic merit. (40%)
  2. Written statement (60%)

Application Procedures

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made. Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

  • A copy of your high school academic record and ATAR outcome,
  • A copy of your JCU academic record for 2024,
  • A written statement of no more than 500 words, describing:
    • Why are you applying for the grant and how do you believe the grant will assist you.
    • What do you believe are the key areas for building resilient regional and remote communities.

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant’s good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Selection Process

The award of the bursary will be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

  • AusIMM Far North Queensland Branch representative (chair)
  • Chair to nominate other panel members.

The Selection committee will be responsible for shortlisting and/or interviewing of candidates.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the bursary awardee.

Conditions of the Bursary

  • The recipient must be enrolled at time of payment.
  • At the end of the academic year, a written report must be submitted to the scholarships office, the template will be sent to the student.

Administration of the Bursary

The bursary shall be administered by the scholarships office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the grant shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the grant.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
