The Richard Brookdale Scholarship was established by Scarp Archaeology in memory of Richard Brookdale, a friend, keen fieldworker and supporter of archaeology in the communities of the Gulf of Carpentaria for many years, who passed away in 2013.The purpose of the Scholarship is to support a student on the Cairns, Nguma-bada campus accepted into honours or coursework masters degree with an Australian Indigenous archaeology honours topic.

If all the below statements describe you and your current situation, you are eligible to be nominated:
- I have been accepted into the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or Masters at JCU’s Cairns campus;
- I am undertaking an honours or masters topic in Australian Indigenous archaeology; and
- I am enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit points per teaching period.
If you are nominated for this scholarship you will receive a single payment of $2,500 after the census date of Study Period 1.
Students who meet the eligibility criteria will be nominated by the Staff of the Department of Anthropology, Archaeology and Sociology within the College of Arts, Society and Education.
The nomination will include a written statement detailing how the nominee meets the Selection Criteria as well as an abstract of the project. All students who meet those criteria will be considered by the committee.
Your nomination is individually assessed after the closing date by the selection committee who will rank your nomination against other nominees.
Introduction
The Richard Brookdale Scholarship was established by Scarp Archaeology in memory of Richard Brookdale, a friend, keen fieldworker and supporter of archaeology in the communities of the Gulf of Carpentaria for many years, who passed away in 2013. The purpose of the Scholarship is to support a student on the Cairns, Nguma-bada campus accepted into honours with an Australian Indigenous archaeology honours topic.
Nature of the Scholarship:
The value of the scholarship shall be $2,500, paid in a single instalment after the census date of Study Period 1. One new scholarship shall be offered each year.
Eligibility Criteria
The Richard Brookdale Scholarship shall be open to competition among nominees who:
- have been accepted into the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or Masters at JCU’s Cairns campus;
- are undertaking an honours or masters topic in Australian Indigenous archaeology; and
- are enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit points per teaching period.
Selection Criteria
The Selection Criteria are:
- preference will be given to an honours or masters topic deemed of value to the Australian Aboriginal community;
- undergraduate GPA in archaeology subjects may be taken into consideration; and
- any other criteria that the Selection Committee deems appropriate.
Nomination Procedures
Students are nominated for this Scholarship.
Nominations will be provided to the Selection Committee by staff of the Department of Anthropology, Archaeology and Sociology.
The nomination must include a written statement detailing how the nominee meets the Selection Criteria as well as an abstract of the project.
Nominations must be submitted no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.
The selection committee will consider all students who meet the eligibility criteria.
Selection Process
The award of the scholarship shall be made at the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:
- Dean, College, Arts, Society & Education, or nominee (Chair);
- Head of Social Sciences, or nominee; and
- A staff member of the Discipline of Archaeology as nominated by the Chair; and
- Director Scarp Archaeology, Dr Michael Slack
The Selection Committee reserves the right not to award a Scholarship in any year if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is no applicant of sufficient merit to warrant an award.
The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection process.
Payment
Monies payable to the recipient of an award shall be paid in a single instalment after the census date of Study Period 1. Please allow up to 6 weeks after census date for payment.
Conditions of the Scholarship
If the recipient defers their study, the recipient will no longer be eligible for the award. Where an award is terminated pursuant to the provisions to this clause it may be awarded to another suitable applicant.
All publications and presentations resulting from the project acknowledge that the recipient is the awardee of the "Richard Brookdale Scholarship awarded on behalf of Scarp Archaeology".
The requirements of the Scholarship shall not make the awarding of the Scholarship conditional upon the recipient providing unremunerated services or products to the donor.
A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy..
Administration of the Scholarship
The scholarship shall be administered by the College of Arts Society & Education, on behalf of the Selection Committee.
The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the scholarship.
Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
